Finding Kind with Kari Baker
Welcome back to the Autism Family Resource Podcast! Today’s episode features Kari Baker—an inspiring author, speaker, and podcaster who opens up about her journey raising her 13-year-old son with autism and ADHD. Kari’s experiences have been the foundation of her book, Finding Kind, a deeply personal exploration of her growth as a parent, her son’s achievements, and the lessons they’ve both learned.
About Kari’s Book, Finding Kind: Discovering Hope and Purpose while Loving Kids with Invisible Neurological Differences. Kari began writing Finding Kind in 2018, encouraged by a friend who saw the power in her weekly stories about parenting. She initially stopped writing after her husband noted the stories sounded like parenting was a struggle—a perspective Kari hadn’t intended to convey. But after taking time to reflect, she returned to her manuscript in 2022 with a fresh approach and a renewed sense of purpose, wanting to share not only the challenges but also the incredible moments of growth, joy, and surprise. Kari’s son wrote the foreword to the book, adding his perspective to their shared journey.
“I bet not many autism parent books have, Star Wars and Lord of the rings in the first two
pages. But, that’s my kid, and he’s just perfectly reflected.” — Kari Baker
Creating a Podcast for Fostering Connection
Kari’s podcast started as an unexpected venture when her writing coach encouraged her to expand her outreach. Now, it’s become a platform where she connects with people dedicated to supporting neurodiverse individuals. Through her episodes, she has met inspiring guests—parents, professionals, and advocates—who share her mission of creating a kinder world for children with autism.
You Are Not Alone
The central message Kari emphasizes is the importance of community. Connecting with other parents going through similar experiences helped her see that many of her son’s behaviors are shared across the autism community. She encourages listeners to find their tribe—through Facebook groups, online forums, local events, or schools—because knowing you’re not alone makes all the difference.
“You are not alone. Find your community. Surround yourself with those who understand,
uplift, and support you.” — Kari Baker
