Robby the Dyslexic Taxi: Transforming Challenges into Creativity
In the latest episode of the Autism Family Resource Podcast, host Brian Keene explores how one family’s journey to turn the challenges of dyslexia into art. Mother-son duo, Lynn and Jonathan Greenberg, share their story and their recent collaboration on the heartwarming children's book, "Robby the Dyslexic Taxi."
Jonathan's Journey with Dyslexia:
Lynn knew early on that Jonathan was a little different, but his elementary school offered few resources to help. Jonathan struggled with dyslexia and recalls the negative labels he faced from peers and educators alike. Actively seeking help led Lynn to discover the Windward School. Jonathan conveyed the huge impact of knowing his challenges had a name, dyslexia, and that there are schools like Windward where you could be understood and helped.
"I was kind of relieved because it was nice to know that I was not what people were saying I was."
The skills taught at Windward and Jonathan's perseverance led him to pursue a college education in art, breaking barriers and defying stereotypes associated with dyslexia.
The Inspiration Behind "Robby the Dyslexic Taxi":
During the COVID lockdown, Lynn and Jonathan found inspiration in creating something meaningful. The idea of a dyslexic taxi navigating the challenges of reading signs and directions emerged.
"We decided that a car that couldn't read the signs, how would that car navigate? And how would this car go about getting his passengers to where they needed to be?"
The Creative Cab Company, introduced in the book, becomes a metaphor for a supportive community that understands and embraces differences.
The Significance of "Robby the Dyslexic Taxi":
Jonathan emphasizes that the book has a dual audience: children with dyslexia and their parents and people who know nothing about dyslexia. The book aims to instill confidence and show that being different doesn't hinder future accomplishments.
"Just because you are different does not mean they are not going to be able to accomplish things in the future. You shouldn't feel inferior in any way."
The positive feedback Jonathan and Lynn have received has inspired them to create a series featuring other cars with different learning differences, promoting a sense of community.
Empowering Messages for Parents:
Lynn provides valuable advice for parents, urging them to listen to their child, both verbally and nonverbally. She highlights the importance of understanding and supporting a child's unique learning style.
"Try to understand what the child is saying, and not saying, and go with your gut and be supportive."
Jonathan's perspective on dyslexia as a superpower becomes a powerful message for parents and individuals alike – embrace your differences as strengths.
"For me, it's been a superpower because it allowed me to focus on drawing in art, and because of that, I was able to make a book."
"Robby the Dyslexic Taxi" not only tells a heartwarming tale but serves as a catalyst for conversations about dyslexia, creativity, and the importance of supportive communities. Lynn and Jonathan's story is a testament to the power of perseverance, collaboration, and embracing differences.
